Department of Engineering Mechanics

The Department of Engineering Mechanics, established under the leadership of Academician Qian Lingxi and Professor Tang Limin in 1957, is one of the first departments to offer engineering mechanics programs in China. In 1981, its major discipline mechanics was among the first to be approved to award doctoral degree. In 1985, the postdoctoral research station of mechanics was established. In 1987, computational mechanics was recognized as a national key discipline. In 1996, the department was among the first to be approved to award doctoral degree under the first-level discipline of mechanics. In 2001, engineering mechanics was recognized as a national key discipline. In 2007, its mechanics was recognized as a first-level national key discipline. In recent years, the department has been selected as one of the first national first-class undergraduate major construction sites of the Double Ten Thousand Plan and into the Strengthening Basic Disciplines Plan of the Ministry of Education; it has been approved as the Base 2.0 of the National Top-notch Student Training Program in Basic Disciplines. Mechanics has been selected as a national Double First-class Construction Discipline, and has achieved excellent results in the previous discipline evaluations by the Ministry of Education.
The first-level discipline of mechanics consists of a number of second-level disciplines, including engineering mechanics, solid mechanics, computational mechanics, general mechanics and basic mechanics, fluid mechanics, geotechnical and environmental mechanics, dynamics and control, applied experimental mechanics, aerospace mechanics and engineering, biological and nanomechanics, mechanics of manufacturing processes, and biomedical engineering. The department accommodates a couple of high-level national research platforms, such as the State Key Laboratory of Structural Analysis, Optimization and CAE Software for Industrial Equipment, the National & Local Joint Engineering Research Center of Advanced Equipment Design and CAE Software Development, the International Joint Research Center of Structural Optimization Theory and Applications, the Numerical Simulation and Optimization of Rubber and Plastic Molding, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation of Major Civil Engineering and Water Conservancy Projects.
