Where we are in designing new materials and their properties

Abstract

In designing new materials and their properties, it is inevitable to conduct a series of costly experiments. Computational modeling, like finite element modeling (FEM) can play an important role in not only providing valuable information to material designer especially before material fabrication, but also reducing the number of experimental tests required. In this talk, the past and current work on composite modeling, such as damage analysis of polymer composites and biocomposites, assessment of muscle fatigue, and interaction between dental implant and mandible system will be presented. Experimental verification for the simulated results of the proposed models is of the utmost importance. The techniques that are currently used at our research group like nanomechancial characterization will also be presented.

Biography of Gary Tsui

Dr. Gary Chi-Pong TSUI was awarded a first-class honours degree in Manufacturing Engineering and a Ph.D. degree from the department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1998 and 2002 respectively. He was also a recipient of a prestigious award “Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship” in 2000/2001 during his Ph.D. study. Dr. Tsui is currently an assistant professor in ISE department for undertaking both teaching and research activities. His specialism is in the field of computational modeling and analysis with research emphasis on composite material engineering. Since 1998, more than 50 articles have been published or accepted for publication in refereed international journal. More than 10 papers were published in the top-tier or prestigious international journals such as Biomaterials, Journal of Biomechanics as well as Composite Science and Technology. Because of his creativity and research strength, he became one of the inventors to derive a method of creating and analyzing active finite elements. The invention led to a U.S. patent in 2006. He is currently an honorary secretary of Institute of Industrial Engineers (Hong Kong) for promoting the discipline of industrial engineering.
